Emotional agency is a term coined by game developer Gregory Weir to describe game choices that "carry emotional weight and visible consequences that paradoxically have little to no effect on the events of the game". It is considered a way to create immersive, intriguing games without having to program too much variation at all, which takes a lot of resources. With emotional agency, players feel like their actions have meaning even if the overall outcome remains the same.
